register to vote.regi >> this was a conflict between state law and federal law. basically federal law requiress foam attest under a penalty of perjury that they are americancn citizens. the arizona law was different. it went a step further and said people need to not only attest they are u.s. citizens but provide documentation to prove it's the case. c the supreme court ruled and said that the constitution under a principle called preemption wins out and the federal law needs tt honor that. >> does that mean that the fact that people need to affirm that they are citizens under risk ofo perjury that that is enough? e >> that's enough for now. n the important words are for now because the way the supremey t court opinion was written yesterday it basically says that the federal government needs to do a bit more to ensure this and if arizona wants to come back ii the future and do this.

for right now you have attest you are a citizen under penalty of perjury is enough. >> this is applies to arizona. a there are other states that are considering these proof of citizenship requirements ant like. does this -- it sounds like what you are saying, that does not necessarily put the ciebash on those efforts. >> there are four states with similar laws and those aree effected in the short term. there's a dozen others looking at this. in congress there's a lot off support for this kind ever provision. there are members of congress yesterday who put outof statemee who basically said we disagree with this opinion and we want to change the federal law so that the federal law muchs the the arizona law. it's one way of getting around it. the supreme court's ruling may not be final in this case. >> one of the things when you hear people who disagree withe w this ruling, they point out we're in a new age right now, n we're fighting this terrorism
